Do We Really Need Mars?

Thoughts on jobs, money, and uninvited visitors on a planet we haven't reached yet.


About 140 million miles away sits a cold red desert that one man has spent two decades promising to fill with people.

Elon Musk founded SpaceX in 2002 to make humanity multiplanetary, and the plan was specific. Five uncrewed Starships would leave in the late 2026 window, when the trip shrinks to seven to nine months. The first passengers would be Tesla's Optimus robots, testing the landing. Humans could follow as early as 2029, more likely 2031. The endgame: a self-sustaining city of a million people.

A new civilization, very soon. That was the promise.

Then Mars got postponed by a tweet

In February 2026, on Super Bowl Sunday, Musk announced SpaceX had shifted focus to building a self-growing city on the Moon instead. His math was blunt: a Moon city takes under ten years, a Mars city twenty or more, because the Moon is reachable every ten days while Mars opens its door once every 26 months. Mars would now start in five or six years. The same man had called the Moon a distraction a year earlier.

I'm not here to dunk on him. Timelines slip, and nobody else is even trying. But if the person most committed to a Mars civilization keeps finding reasons it can wait, it's fair to ask: do we actually need one?

The money paradox

On a podcast this January, Musk gave advice no financial advisor would give. Don't bother saving for retirement, because in ten or twenty years it won't matter. AI will surpass the intelligence of all humans combined by 2030, robots will outnumber people, and work will become optional, like growing your own vegetables instead of buying them. He has said flat out that AI and robots will replace all jobs.

Hold those two ideas together. One: build a civilization on Mars, the most labor-intensive project in history. Two: labor is about to be obsolete.

So what exactly will humans do there?

Help wanted, red planet

Run through the job listings. Construction? The first crews were literally going to be robots. Life support? AI monitors atmosphere better than a tired human. Doctor? Until the diagnostic models arrive. Farming, fuel production, repairs? Chemistry and maintenance love automation.

Follow the logic to the end and the only irreplaceable job on Mars is being human. Living there. Raising kids there. Being the backup copy. The civilization isn't a workforce. The civilization is the product.

And nobody commutes. When the trip takes seven months and the return window opens every 26, you don't take a job on Mars. You emigrate.

What do you even pay with?

Light takes four to twenty four minutes between the planets, so Earth banking is useless in real time. Mars needs its own ledger, and Musk has long hinted it would be something crypto-like. The old Starlink beta terms even declared Mars a free planet, not governed by Earth.

But independence is a costume at first. For decades every screw, chip, and antibiotic arrives from Earth, priced by the rocket fuel it took to send it. Mars imports everything and exports only science, patents, and the story of itself. A civilization funded by being interesting.

The risk sheet

Safety: no magnetic field, so radiation pours in. Toxic perchlorate soil. Gravity at 38 percent, with unknown effects on pregnancy and children. The nearest hospital is a seven month ambulance ride that departs every two years.

Efficiency: one serious life support failure ends everyone. Musk admitted this himself when explaining the Moon pivot, worrying that a catastrophe could stop the resupply ships and let the colony die out. The backup plan for civilization needs civilization to keep mailing it packages.

And my favorite: uninvited visitors. They go both directions. We're the first ones, landing with trillions of microbes and contaminating the one lab that could tell us whether life ever started twice. If anything lives under that ice, it eventually visits us, inside our habitats, inside our lungs. And the third kind is the most human: the Outer Space Treaty says no one owns Mars, so when another country lands next to your settlement, there's no border, no zoning office, and no one to call. Every visitor to Mars is uninvited, including us.

So, is it necessary?

Musk's answer has always been insurance: a second home in case something happens to the first. But his own math says the policy dies without monthly deliveries from the thing it's insuring. That's why he's practicing on the Moon.

Maybe that's the honest answer. Mars isn't necessary yet. It's the species writing a goal on the whiteboard, knowing the deadline will slip, and keeping it up there anyway.

If AI does the work and money stops mattering, a Mars civilization has no jobs, no economy, and no practical purpose. Would we still go?

I think we would. And I think that says more about us than about Mars.
